  • According to traffic logs, someone’s been viewing this site in Netscape 4.04 using Windows NT.

Do these pages even come close to working in that browser? (yes, I am a web developer, but I haven’t used 4.04 in years and don’t even have access to anything below 4.79 for testing)

In 4.79, it is almost readable other than some parts overlapping each other and all the stuff on the right being shoved to the bottom.

The 42 “snowflakes” listed sequentially at the end of the page are rather humorous.

If you see something similar, is this level of site degredation acceptable to you or not?

  • Hi~
I would be the one viewing this site with Netscape 4.04 and Windows NT. I can never read the very top line of your latest post until it scrolls down or I go into the “comments” section, but other than that and one javascript error when I first log in, it seems to work. I know I need to update all my computer stuff, but I don’t know how to do it. :( Jorma set me up on Windows 2000 instead of XP, and then dumped me and I don’t have any idea what I’m doing with this computer, so I haven’t really done any updating.

  • Thanks for the feedback.

I’m not sure about the JavaScript error, but it makes sense, since Netscape made major changes to their browser going into 4.7x.

The top line thing is something I may have to think about since it also effects 4.7x. I know what the problem is and how to fix it, but I’m not sure another way to accomplish the same things offhand.

I’ll put the browser update thing as a full post since I like evangalizing.

My main recommendation would be Opera which you can download here:
    http://www.opera.com/download/

Netscape’s latest can be downloaded here:
    http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp

When you download, save the files to someplace you can get back to (like your desktop). Then close all your programs and double click on the file that you’ve downloaded. It should lead you through step by step instructions for installation. You’re probably best off accepting all the defaults.

  • Thank you! I just downloaded Opera and your page is much more user friendly to me now. Now I even know what the “snow” is. I admit, I had no idea what that was supposed to be. Thanks again.

  • Yay! I’ve converted another! *muh ah ha ha*

Hmm.. evil cackles don’t go well with “Yay!”

    Glad you got set up.
