  • Psykomeyeko has spent a couple posts on Aspartame.

I don’t trust Aspartame, not even a little bit. I think it messes with your brain, and I think it messes with your body. I believe it to be a poison with little to no redeeming value.

I can’t say that everything Psykomeyeko is reporting is correct. I suspect his posts are similar to some of Strange Black Cat’s older posts – lumping all the rumors and fact together and leaving verification as an excercise to the reader, which, frankly, makes it at least as accurate as FOX news.

Anyway, head on over and read the posts (post 1, post 2) and counterpoints that have been made. See what you think, and consider looking into it for yourself.

  • glad ur interested in this. I admit that I have lumped a lot of things together…and lots of points might seem questionable. I don’t fully trust all of them myself…some of the sources are not very expansive. But I’m curious to see what other relevant information people might have that could get down to the truth to aspartame. Personally, I would avoid it as much as possible.

  • I completely agree!  I used to drink all diet pop because of the sugar problem I have but it would constantly make me sick to my stomach or dizzy etc.,  My mom was also having a lot of problems with muscle weakness and signs of MS as were a lot of my aunts who were drinking diet colas.  After stopping the diet for a while their strengths have returned and they do not have as many symptoms as they did while drinking diet.  Replacement sugars are baaaaad juju.

  • I prefer Splenda. I am sure someone will come along and nail it at some point too.

I drink diet soda a lot. It has Aspartame in it. I did a lot of reading and research. Some people react badly to it. However; some people are allergic to peanuts and that doesn’t stop me from eating those.

I am willing to believe that my drinking 2% of the dosage used in the tests MIGHT cause me problems.

What I have the problem with, is going to a restaraunt where they allow smoking that I KNOW 100% without a doubt will cause problems. We know 100% that smoking KILLS.

There are a LOT of other things that to me are more dangerous than Aspartame like driving to work.

    IMHO

I don’t think that aspartame is a matter of whether you react to it, if its a toxin as they say, then its something that can slowly build in u. It’s symptoms are not always noticeably obvious.

I agree wit u that there are many big killers out there. My problem with aspartame lies in how its in so many of the products people consume, how so many people are completely ignorant of its effects (so they consume it and blame the cause of certain symptoms on other things), how the FDA takes steps to cover-up its dangers for the benefit of American corporations, and how many other potential debilitating poisons we have in our food we are ignorant of.

There are dangers that kill us right away like cars, but I for one, would prefer to do everything I can to avoid death…and excluding a diet with aspartame doesn’t seem all that difficult.

  • Just the other night I caught a science show that debunked the myth of aspartame containing formaldehyde.  However, they did prove that once ingested an enzyme in the liver does indeed convert aspartame to formaldehyde.  If that wasn’t enough to scare me off of Diet Coke, there is the fact that I’ve been poisoned by the caffeine and it’s started to cause very visible, very significant problems as of late.  So I’m weaning off of caffeine, nicotine and artificial sweeteners.  Of course, avoiding artifical sweeteners in my case (with JD) is going to be difficult and tricky, and not possible to do completley, but I’ve got to try.  The stuff about Stevia is correct though, it’s much safer, and much more difficult to find, but if you can find it, it works great for baking, I’ve used it before.

  • I buy stevia at the coop. The green stuff (basically ground leaf) adds a significant flavor and isn’t great for sweetening things like sweeting tea/coffee or making ‘fridgerator pickles, but I’ve heard it is good for baking.

I’ve heard there is also a more refined (which in my book generally means less good) version that is white and is more “just sweetener”.

Seriously though, don’t make fridgerator pickles with the green stuff. Ick.

Oh, and Tika4, you have my sympathies trying to cut down on all that stuff at once. Good Luck!

  • Thanks for the sympathies, I need them. :P   I haven’t been so successful as of yet, but I’m still trying and that’s better than giving up.  I do okay in the mornings, but by late afternoon I start slipping.  I don’t know what a firdgerator pickle is, do you mean just pickling your own cucumbers?  Never done that, although a friend of mine has and they were pretty good pickles, lol.  The white, refined Steevia is easier to come by and yeh, it can be used to sweeten things like coffe or tea.  Personally, I take my coffe black, though now I only take decaf, lol.

  • ‘Fridgerator pickles aren’t really pickled, just basically thin sliced cucumbers and onion left to sit in the fridge in a brine syrup (vinegar, water, sugar, and salt).

I suppose that is a pickle, but they taste different to me. Kind of egg rolls vs spring rolls difference – both are good, but one tastes “fresher”.
